Hello 2020!

Hello 2020! It's been a good while since we posted (...only like nine years) but Cedarville SuperMileage is still going strong! Our current two competition cars are Sting and Karch. Sting will be racing in Sonoma, California in the Americas Shell Eco Marathon in April. Karch will be racing in June in Michigan at the SAE competition. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and will update you soon!

2010-2011 Year-In Review

A New Year

A new year has begun, the projects have started and we are working towards getting our new car completely designed and manufactured. We have projects ranging from the on-board computer system to EFI to streamlining the current cars. There have been many new faces this year and those students are learning a lot. They’ve learned the basics of the shop, Solidworks, GUIs, engines and have gotten involved in the many projects headed by the upperclassmen. We’re off and running, with lots to do and lots of new hands to help!

Houston Recap

After a long 20 hr drive down to Houston, we finally pulled into the conference center where we would stay for the next 4 days. After unloading and struggling to put up tents, we started preparing for the next day's race.
After a picture of all of the participants, we headed back to finalize the cars and then pushed them out to the race start. We had a rough run the first day. Slipstream was not able to finish and GL2 finished one run to put us on the board and then had a bad spill in which the canopy was cracked and the body scratched.

After a long night of polishing out the canopy and with Dr. Z's expertise, the car looked awesome and was ready for the next day's race.
Slipstream was first that day to finish the race putting both cars on the board. After two days of racing, Slipstream with Michelle Doyle driving broke the school record and then GL2 also broke the current record with Jeff Oakley driving.
It was an awesome weekend the final mileage for the cars were:
GL2: over 1400, 4th
Slipstream: over 1200, 7th

The Next competition is in Michigan for SAE Supermileage, June 10 and 11.

HOUSTON!!!

The team leaves in less than a week for Houston, Texas for our first competition of the year. We still have LOTS of work to do on the cars but we are making progress. On a good note our computer system is done and error free at the moment. The engine is continuing to look promising as are doing dyno testing. With some modifications to the steering the body is almost done as well. It's mostly tying together all of the little pieces to make a fully functional car with all of the new modifications that have been done throughout the year. We are ALMOST THERE....

Christmas break!

Well, the team has made it to Christmas break. We have the mobile command center well underway. And the body team has the chassis system design done. The reports are going to be submitted soon for the competitions. After break the push weeks will start as the new car needs to be built so that it is ready for the first competition at Shell in the spring.

Updates since Wes last posted

The team was able to fly to California to compete in Shell Eco Marthon. This was an awesome trip. The team was a lot smaller than normal because they only brought one car GL2. But they had an amazing time. We also had some ground breaking events such as GL2 having the new computer system onboard. This was coupled with some minor problems but it was a good preview of the how vital the computer system may become in future years.

Forever and a Day Ago...

At least that what it seems like since we've posted last. We are currently working on a new car which is exciting and time consuming all at the same time. Everyone knows how that goes. It'll look like our blue car that has the wheels on the outside but we've completly resdesigned the steering, chassis, and engine. Which means everything is different on the inside but still the same on the out.

It's over.

The Shell Eco-Marathon has come and gone and now we are stuck at school trying to catch up on all the work we missed. Overall it was a good experience for our team especially the younger sophomore members who have never been to a competition. The Cedarville Teams ended up placing 6th with Gold Lighting 3 (the red car) with 1,151.1 mpg and 7th with Slipstream (the blue car) with 1,056.3 mpg. We were the top combustion engine run cars without fuel injection. Which means...next year we are running with some fuel injection action. Our small school was able to beat out schools such as Rose Hulman, UCLA, LSU, Louisiana Tech University, and UC Berkeley. Here are some pictures from the last day of competition.

Eco Day 2

Day 2 was our first day of "racing" here at the Shell Eco-Marathon. The day started early (4am) for some of us on the team due to a live TV interview with the Dayton ABC/FOX and NBC stations. After that we prepped our cars for the track and then took the group pictures with all the cars and shell volunteers. From there things kinda when downhill a bit...Right as the Gold Lightning car was about to head out we couldn't find the connector for the headset so we flipped our bay upside down trying to find it. Eventually we just resorted to using cell phones w/headsets. Once that problem was solved I drove onto the track only to have the canopy blow open on me due to the extremely high winds we had here. Fortunately there was no damage but UNfortunatly it meant back to the shop...To fix that problem we made a stronger latching system to withstand the high winds. Now, just before you think nothing else could possibly go wrong, it did. As we are rolling out to the track we blow our back tire. *sigh* Needless to say we were a bit frustrated at that point. Never the less we fixed all our problems (for the most part) and we were still able to put 3 good runs on the board and allow Mary some practice time.

Eco-Marathon Day 1

Hello from sunny Southern California!
Day one of the Eco-Marathon has come and gone and both GL III and Slipstream II have passed through inspection. There were some minor delays on getting them through but all is well now. We have an early morning tomorrow due to a live interview via satellite with the Dayton ABC and FOX news channels taking place at 8:30 eastern time which is 5:30am our time... Hopefully we can pull some sweet action runs tomorrow and saturday. Here are some pics from today.

LA!

Dustin, Brandon, Witry and I left Cedarville today at 2 pm and flew to LA. We just got in and are at brandon's house currently. The rest of the team should be waking up right about now to start driving to Columbus and fly out to meet us tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow is gonna be a fun day of prepping the cars like mad.

A long time coming...

So here we are, April 2nd and the cars are actually being shipped to Cali today. To be honest I didn't think we were gonna make it. With things failing, taking way more time than they should, and us deciding to take an extra car things were looking very bleak for the Cedarville team. Thankfully we had a ton of help and guys (and girls) who stepped up and did what it took so we had finished cars to ship today. I personally have only gotten 8 hours of sleep since I woke up Saturday morning...Gotta love oh crap week. For those of you who don't know what oh crap week is, we have defined it as the week/two weeks before a competition when you truly realize how far you are behind and what needs to get done to pass inspection. Sorry for such a long break from updating. We all have just been crazy busy. Here are some pictures in hopes that you still might love us.

The Morning Show

Hey kids! Welcome back to another school year filled with bondo fumes, fiberglass particles stuck in shirts, and electrical mishaps. Now that I have been back on campus I was able to access our SAE Supermileage pictures from June and put them below. The summer was good for Cedarville Supermileage and allowed us to get our name out to the media which resulted on a few news articles, exotic car show invites, and an interview with the ABC station in Dayton, OH which is coming up Sept 4th. Next thing you know we'll be on Good Morning America...Anywho we are all really stoked about that and the things to come this year mileage wise. Enjoy the pictures from SAE!

I recently returned from six fun weeks at Officer Candidate School for the Marine Corps so needless to say I've been a little behind on the updates. Here is an article published by our public relations department talking about our 2nd place finish at SAE Supermileage.

Cedarville, Ohio — With gas prices on the rise, the pressure to find alternative fuels and improve fuel economy just keeps increasing. To encourage creative research on these issues, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) held its 28th Annual SAE International Supermileage® competition June 7-8 to see which engineering students could come up with the best “supermileage” on their self-designed and self-built vehicles.

Ready for the challenge, 10 Cedarville engineering students and their advisor, Dr. Larry Zavodney, designed and built two sleek cars, made to run frugally on regular automotive gasoline.

At the Eaton Corporation Marshall Proving Grounds in Marshall, Mich., Cedarville’s Gold Lightning II took second place with 1,240 miles per gallon. To put this into perspective, the car could have driven to California on less than two gallons of gas.

The competition included 32 schools from the U.S., Canada, India, and Bahrain. Schools such as Rose-Hulman (1,541 mpg), UCLA (832 mpg), and the University of Dayton (188 mpg) competed.

There and back again.

So the Eco-Marathon has come and gone and Cedarville had their best showing of cars ever. We were able to break and re-break the the school record a few times on Saturday. I must say our cars were the stars of the show with many onlookers and only a few jealous critizers. Overall Cedarville put the most runs on the board and GL2 never broke down once. We calculated that we drove GL2 alone for over 100 miles in the matter of a few days without a single problem. Talk about reliability. In case you are looking for stats, GL2 took 4th with 1135.3 mpg, GL1 got 7th with 897.9 mpg and "Slipstream" took 9th with 732.8 mpg and only one complete run.
